The word Oregano comes from the Greeks, which means "mountain of joy". The Greeks believed the sweet smell was created by Aphrodite as a symbol of happiness. Oregano was placed in tombs to give peace to the departed, and bridal couples were crowned with it. As a culinary herb, Oregano has a strong flavor, but has unique medicinal qualities which were well known from ancient times. In the 5th century B. In the 15th century, Paracelsus used it to treat diarrhea, psoriasis, vomiting, jaundice, and fungal diseases. Mediterranean people used it as a meat preservative.
The spice used today in food is not “true” Oregano; it is more likely to be marjoram or Mexican sage. Both marjoram and Mexican sage are used because of their sweet taste, but their medicinal properties are different than “true” Oregano. The key constituent in Oregano is a phenol called carvacrol. Carvacrol is a potent and natural compound that is very effective in fighting bacteria, virus, fungus, and parasites of all types. This herb has antibacterial and anti-fungal, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Oregano tea has been used to relieve indigestion, bloating, flatulence, coughs, urinary problems, bronchial problems, headaches, swollen glands, and it promotes menstruation. At this point in time, there are few studies that refute or support treatment of any of the above conditions.
