FAQ
OsteoPrime contains both strontium and calcium. Should these two minerals be taken together or will one interfere with the absorption of the other?
Dr. Allen Gaby, co-formulator of OsteoPrime, comments:

To the best of my knowledge, the idea that strontium and calcium should not be taken together is theoretical, and not based on any clinical research. Some of the studies in which strontium therapy was beneficial did not separate the strontium from the calcium, or at least did not mention anything about whether or not they were taken together or apart. There are many nutrients that share the same absorption mechanism with other nutrients, but that does not mean they have to taken separately. Many foods contain both strontium and calcium, and the body seems to have figured out how to absorb them both.

It is possible (though I am not aware of any documentation) that, when giving massive doses of strontium, the absorption would be greater if calcium were not taken at the same time. However, there is evidence that high-dose strontium has significant adverse effects, including some adverse effects on bone. There is also evidence that lower doses of strontium may be more effective than higher doses, with respect to maintaining bone health. For those reasons, I am reluctant to recommend the high doses of strontium that some doctors claim should not be taken at the same time as calcium. The amount of strontium in OsteoPrime is physiological (i.e., similar to the amount naturally occurring in food), and one might reasonably presume that the body's normal absorption mechanisms would be able to handle both the strontium and calcium at the same time.

Why so many types of calcium in this formula?
Simply put, more forms of calcium ensure more complete availability in the body. Each calcium salt—that is, each calcium attached to a different mineral—offers differing quantities of elemental calcium. Elemental calcium is the “bottom line” amount of calcium you absorb from food or a supplement. And while some calcium/mineral combinations have more elemental calcium than others, they’re not always easy to absorb. For example, calcium lactate is about 32 percent absorbed while calcium citrate is approximately 30 percent absorbed. Tricalcium phosphate is an important addition to the formula because is the most prevalent form of calcium in human bone.
