2 Resistance Training Mistakes:

To boost your metabolism, burn fat, and sculpt a sexy body, you need to do some resistance training. Don’t worry, weight training won’t make you big like a man. Remember, weights make women tight and firm, not large!

Here are two common mistakes many people make when they first start training with weights:
1) Mirror Training: This is when you only train those muscles you can see in the mirror. Big mistake! For a healthy, balanced, great-looking body, you need to train all your muscle groups, including you back and the backs of your legs. Not only will this make you look better, but the muscles in the back of your body are usually the largest.

Since the strength of your metabolism is essentially based on how much muscle you have, training the back and hamstrings will greatly boost your metabolic rate. And that means long-term fat loss! The one arm row (pictured) is a great back exercise!

2) Not using enough weight. Many women think that they have to do dozens of reps with light weight. Wrong! In truth, if you're getting over 15 reps, you need to use a heavier weight. High rep weight training just isn't that beneficial, and it's a myth that you need high reps to "burn fat."

In general, aim for 6 to 12 reps per set. Your last rep should be hard to do but not impossible. If your last rep is super easy, add weight!
 
Enter the Tabata Method
Tabata is the name of a Japanese researcher who discovered an interesting way for athletes to get trough their workouts quickly. Interestingly, it also worked for people who want to lose fat quickly. This training method is so simple it’s ridiculous. What is it? Take one exercise, whether it’s lifting a weight, peddling a stationary bike, or running down the street, and perform it in the following mater:

    •Do the activity for twenty     seconds
    •Rest for ten seconds.
    •Repeat seven more times.

That’s it! You’re done in four minutes! Eight sets of as many reps as you can get done, interspersed with brief ten-second rest periods—simple and effective.

If you decide to use weights for your Tabata exercise, we recommend the “thruster.”
The thruster is one of the greatest lifts no one have heard of in the gym. Take two dumbbells and hold them at shoulder height. Squat down, keeping the dumbbells on the shoulders. As you rise up, press the dumbbells to the overhead lockout position. You can either press as you rise up or use the momentum to help “kick” the dumbbells overhead. We find that we do a little bit of both in the four minutes. Thusters do things to your heart rate and breathing that we honestly can’t describe. Go light! A 10-pound dumbbell in each hand is a very difficult thurster workout.

Of course, you may not want to use weights for the Tabata method. Other possible choices include:

    •Sprinting
    •Riding the stationary bike
    •Nordic Track
    •Elliptical Trainer
    •Treadmill
    •Push ups
    •Jumping jacks
    •Jump rope
Tabata tips 
You need to be able to see a wall clock with a second hand during your four minutes of fun. Stop at twenty seconds, rest ten seconds, and go again. Watching the clock seems to help with the focus. If you do thrusters, put the dumbbells on a bench and watch the clock with you hands ready. This little trick of staying with the weight seems to help make those ten seconds seem like, well, not much, really! But as least you don’t have to move much to get the weights again. As far as frequency, any exercise is better than no exercise. Exercising once a week is better than zero times a week. Twice a week is better once a week. Three times a week is better than twice a week, and so on and so forth. 
 
However, for general fat-loss purposes, we recommend you use the Tabata Method 4 times a week. For instance, you might exercise on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. 
 
240 seconds of pain 
The Tabata program might be the single best “fat burning workout” that we know. It might only be four minutes, but you seem to keep sweating and breathing hard for a long, long time afterwards.
