It has been used in Ayurveda as a rejuvenative for the nervous system. Also used in Pancha Karma to dust kapha individuals after oil massage. Calamus has been regarded as an aphrodisiac in India and Egypt for at least 2,500 years. Calamus was valued as a stimulant, bitter herb for the appetite (if not for the appetites), and as an aid to the digestion. The use of Calamus in foods is prohibited in the United States by the FDA. Whether or not it can be used as an ingredient in a dietary supplement is not clear.

In the 70's and '80s, studies demonstrating carcinogenic activity in animals were conducted with rodents fed or injected massive doses of beta - asarone. The Indian variety of Calamus contains beta-asarone and was subsequently banned from use in foods in the United States. Pending clarification on this issue, Banyan's bulk Calamus powder is not for human consumption.

DR. CLAUDIA WELCH

Claudia Welch is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and a practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine. She began her study of Ayurveda in 1987 under the supervision of her mentor, Dr. Robert Svoboda. She lived in India for three years, where she studied Ayurveda, Sanskrit and related subjects. Dr. Welch worked at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, NM with her teacher, Dr. Vasant Lad, for seven years. She has completed Hart de Fouw's Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Jyotish workshops. She received her Master's Degree in Oriental Medicine from Southwest Acupuncture College in 1997. 
 
Dr. Welch is a faculty member at The Ayurvedic Institute, Southwest Acupuncture College and at Acupractice Seminars in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Welch has lectured on Oriental and Ayurvedic medicines internationally. She has a private practice in Albuquerque.
