Also known as Indian sarsaparilla, this herb is believed to purify the blood and have diuretic and diaphoretic actions. Anantamul, literally 'the eternal root' in Sanskrit, is a thin creeping plant with long, red spreading roots and a sweet, aromatic odor. Its Hindi name, Sugandhi, means 'the fragrant one'. Anantamul's color and spreading quality suggest its affinity for the circulatory system and the blood. It spreads throughout the body, cooling and removing excess pitta in the digestive tract, joints, nerves and reproductive system.

DR. CLAUDIA WELCH

Claudia Welch is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and a practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine. She began her study of Ayurveda in 1987 under the supervision of her mentor, Dr. Robert Svoboda. She lived in India for three years, where she studied Ayurveda, Sanskrit and related subjects. Dr. Welch worked at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, NM with her teacher, Dr. Vasant Lad, for seven years. She has completed Hart de Fouw's Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Jyotish workshops. She received her Master's Degree in Oriental Medicine from Southwest Acupuncture College in 1997. 
 
Dr. Welch is a faculty member at The Ayurvedic Institute, Southwest Acupuncture College and at Acupractice Seminars in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Welch has lectured on Oriental and Ayurvedic medicines internationally. She has a private practice in Albuquerque.
